Study Regarding the Surgical Treatment for Excessive Sweating

In April of 2007, the report of a study regarding surgical treatment for excessive sweating was released. This condition, known medically as hyperhidrosis, typically affects the underarms, palms of the hands, face and feet. The number of people who suffer from this condition is surprisingly high at around 3% of the global population.
The goal of the surgery was to reduce the amount of sweating in people with this condition, which can mean that they sweat three or four times the amount of someone without the condition. In the surgery, the nerves are cut that are responsible for sending the signals to the sweat glands in the affected areas.
The study team at the Barrow Neurological Institute, located in Phoenix, AZ, analyzed the results of 300 patients who had surgery as a treatment for excessive sweating.
The exact cause of the condition is not well understood, but results in an over-activity of the nerves that send the signals to the sweat glands. While there are other available treatments such as specialty deodorants, Botox injections and others, surgery is considered an option when these other remedies are proven ineffective at making excessive sweating stop.
The results of the surgery are worth noting. While the surgery stopped excessive sweating in the palms in over 99% of patients, it only worked to stop excessive underarm sweating in 61% of patients.
The complications of the surgery should be considered by anyone considering having this procedure done. Among the 300 people studied, the complications included 2 cases of irregular heartbeat. Seven patients suffered a condition that results from unintended cutting or damage to nerves near those that were designed to the severed by the surgery. This can demonstrate itself in several different way including eyelid drooping and decreased pupil size. In addition, six patients suffered from the onset of pain caused by damage to the nerves located between the ribs.
While surgery is an option to people who suffer from excessive sweating, it is important to know that research shows there to be significant complications arising from this kind of surgery. It would be worthwhile to evaluate and trial the many other remedies that are not as invasive as a surgical procedure.
